Summer means Lots of Thrifting

When I am on summer vacation from school I get to do tons of thrifting. I would usually hit the Hidalgo Flea Market on Fridays during the summer, but a new source has popped up and now you can find me in Hidalgo Wednesday Thursday and sometimes Friday. And of course I hit the Mcallen pulga Saturday and Sunday.

I decided to try my hand at selling on ebay and etsy with all of the extra finds I have collected this summer. I like ebay for the instant gratification, and etsy is nice if you are not in any hurry. My etsy shop and ebay listings can be found under my user name lharri15.

Flea Market Finds

I am officially on summer vacation! And summer vacation means I can go to the Hidalgo Flea Market on Wednesday, Thursday and even Friday if I want to. And this week I almost did just that. I had to work Wednesday but I was in Hidalgo bright and early Thursday morning waiting for "Oscar" to start unloading his truck.

So here is my haul.....

I find myself buying Christmas decor all year long. And it is usually a lot cheaper when your buying it in June as opposed to November or December, even at the flea market.

A pipe dream, more like a stick shift Dream

I bought this stick shift in Cuero, Tx. The store owner said that the man she bought if from did not want to give it up, but his wife made him, poor guy!

This stick shift makes me want to buy a 1985 Ford Truck. The one below looks almost exactly like the one my older sister had to drive in high school. Her first car had been stolen (out of our blocked in driveway, very suspicious) so she was left with my one of my grandfather's ranch trucks. No AC, and a bullet hole through the top where one of his friends aimed too low.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you, that is a globe on the floor next to one of my living room chairs.

I found it as is, with a string run through the hole in the top and bottom, but without a stand. At first I had grand plans to make it a lamp/light fixture like those I saw in Round Top, but alas I am not that crafty. So on the floor it goes, and there it stays (at least for a little while).

This situation was a total accident, I was making room on my other couch and tossed the cheetah and union jack onto the aqua sofa. When I looked over I though that looks Bad A**! And it funks up my somewhat tame living room.

Everyday Table Setting

My dining table had been bare for a while, with only a large vase as a centerpiece. I started playing with some napkins and placemats I had picked up (at St. Vincent De Paul in Dallas). I added some pewter chargers (Texas Thrift Store San Antonio) and my Blue Willow dinner plates (Goodwill Dallas, that I paid the way high price of 1.99 each). I added a wrought iron plate/plant(?) stand with deer antlers (both purchased from a shop in Cuero).

I'm really digging the look.

A quick trip to the flea market

I usually hit the Mcallen flea market on Saturday and Sunday, but this pass weekend I was selling at Edinburg Market Days so I could only make it to the flea market on Sunday.

I like to get there around 9 in the morning to avoid long lines and to get a good parking spot.

Anyway...... Here are my finds for this week.

Funny story about the brass deer... I stop to ask the price and the dad is slicing and eating watermelon and points back with his knife to his son who yells out diez (10). I reply "diez?" not sure I heard correctyly (because I think that is a ridiculous price. In a bad way not a good way). I put the piece down and start to walk away the dad yells ocho (8), and I keep walking then he yells cinco (5) and of course I turn around and say sold. I love it when that happens. And although 5 dollars was still a little too high (in my opinion) I knew I was keeping it for myself so I was okay with it.

Obsessed with Brass

Lately I have found myself drawn to any and all things brass. I just love the patina of aged brass and it really goes well with the decor of my home.

A few months ago I was pumped to find these two large hammered octagonal planters.

Of course I don't have a place for them..... yet.

Before and After

I bought this "french" chair at an auction a few years ago for $20. It was a dark wood color and had a gold and green velvet upholstered seat. I loved the lines, and had previously had covered it myself in a lime green fabric. With my new living room I though it would fit perfectly with just a few changes.
I painted the wood using a metallic paint in titanium. (You can buy this color at Hobby Lobby, the jar is small but it goes a long way). The fabric was a remnant I purchased at Rio Bravo in down town Mcallen for $8 ( a little pricey for a remnant but it was too pretty to pass up). I just added some batting and staple gunned the new fabric over the old upholstery for a very quick fix.

New Furniture = New Living Room Arrangement

Pelmet Box

I am not completely sure how you pronounce Pelmet, but as a fellow blogger once commented everything sounds better in french, or at least pronounced with a french accent. Anyway..... I got this idea from one of my favorite blogs Little Green Notebook
I didn't follow her directions exactly (which translates into I am waiting for it to come crashing down at any moment). But until it does, I think it turned out pretty well, and adds a little extra pizazz to my dining room.

New Living Room

I was waiting to post these pictures until I could find where I put the before photo, but thanks to my Mom's plug (said with a sarcastic tone) on her blog White Spraypaint I didn't want to keep anyone waiting too long.

I purchased these 3 pieces at an antique store in downtown Harlingen. They were in pretty bad shape to begin with, so I got them for an incredible price (at least I think it was an incredible price) $150.

With the help of my parents I hauled all the pieces back to Mcallen and immediately dropped them off at Garcia's Upholstery (Its a hole in the wall place just south of downtown on old 83). I dumped all the pieces, told Mr. Garcia I was in nooooo hurry, and went on a quest to find fabric.

I stumbled upon the linen(esque) light blue fabric in the clearance section at Hancock's, and haggled down the price to $4 dollars a yard. (the haggling part is a long story for another time).

Now for the trim, it was impossible to find a trim that matched exactly and did not clash too much with the wood, or was sooo loud that it was all you saw. I finally decided on nailhead trim, and ordered 50 yards from diyupholsterysupply.com , check out there sight they have great stuff at reasonable prices.

Ok, long story long the finished results are below. And if you live in the RGV and need something recovered, I highly recommend Garcia's Upholstery, they do incredible work at a great price. See for yourself below.

I am still in the process of arranging my living room with the new pieces, and I will post pics when I have it completed.

The Birds

Every morning and evening I am greeted by the singing of birds outside my apartment. There is a small canal with tall grasses growing, where the birds congregate before going on there way. Well this afternoon the chirping was especially loud, and when I stepped out onto my balcony I was greeted with a frightening sight. Hundreds of birds had gathered, and I could only stay outside long enough to take a few pics and film the video below. I was afraid at any moment they would all come flying toward me just like a scene from the above named Alfred Hitchcock movie.

Yes all those black dots are birds!

Bye, Bye Martha

For those of you who still have K-mart in your area you may have noticed that they are putting all of their Martha Stewart on clearance. It seems her contract with them is ending and they are phasing her merchandise out while phasing a new line from Country Living (have you seen the furniture with nailhead AMAZING. And Jaclyn Smith has some really pretty home stuff as well, but that is another post). Anyway..... I bought a few things this weekend, that I thought were a really good deal.

I bought a pair of these mirrored lamps they were on clearance for $18, and the shade was included.

I also picked up these sconces and bookends.

I'm waiting for the pots and pans prices to go down a little more. I will definitely be making many a trip to K-Mart in the next few weeks.

Fabric, Fabric, Fabric

There is a area in Dallas called Harry Hines (since it happens to be along the Harry Hines road) where you can find wholesale jewelry, handbags and other miscellaneous items.It is also where the infamous Sam Moon is located. Harry Hines is very similar to Harwin in Houston (another area named after the street it runs along). When I lived in Dallas and now when I go back to visit I always make a trip to Harry Hines to shop at Ohm an accessory store and to go to the discount fabric stores.
It was at one of these fabric stores that I found the fabric below, which I used for my bedroom. This pattern was $4 a yard, for something that would probably be $25 at Hancock's or JoAnn's. I liked it soo much I went back to buy the rest of the bolt.

This summer, on a visit to Dallas I did my usual drive by of the stores on Harry Hines. This time I was on the lookout for some fabric to recover a couch and chair I had recently purchased at an antique store in Harlingen, TX (before and after pics to come soon).

I didn't find any fabric for my couch, but I did find some remnants that were too cheap to pass up.

Each of these pieces were on $2 a yard!

This toile actually has a pale yellow background. For a brief moment was going to do the chair in the toile and the couch in the pink and green above, but alas not enough yardage for either.
And finally the piece de resistance. My favorite buy of the weekend, I would do an entire living room in this pattern! But they only had 5 yards @ $2/yard. I did do some investigating on the web and found it for $10/yard on a few sites, it is just soooo hard to pay $10 when you just paid $2, Don't ya think?

Re-Design

Over the past few months I have accumulated several really interesting pieces of furniture and chotchkes (sp?), that I had yet to incorporate into my home. So finally after a great shopping trip to Dallas and Canton, I forced myself to find a place for everything. This of course snowballed into a little re-design of my dining room and living room. (See previous post "My Apartment" for before pics).

I bought this bamboo looking table at the St. Vincent DePaul store in Dallas for $5.00!!!
It was originally a bright shiny ugly gold. I painted it silver using Rustoleum Aluminum, and then took it to a glass place to have a mirror fitted for the top.

New pink and orange chinese toile accents pillow, purchased for 1/2 off at world market.

I then decided to paint this table silver as well. It was really beat up and I think the silver camouflages some of the imperfections. I then added my new head, bought at Canton from the "Funky Junk" ladies, who were having a 1/2 off sale.

I had bought this shelf at Round Top in the spring, and painted it this turquoise color to give a little pop of color to the room, and fill up the odd corner space. The paint color is Mediterranean by Valspar.

The Dining Room.

I found this awesome mirror at TJ Maxx, there was only wall it would fit on so I had to rearrange my dining room just a little.

Blue/Gray panels $5 each at K-Mart. Please don't judge! I know they are wrinkled, I keep telling myself to dig out my steamer.....Someday.
I added my Round Top tables (still have a ways to go on their rehabilitation) to either side of the window, and place of few of my treasures on top to hide the imperfections.

Now I just need to work on my bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, and patio..........

Lamps

I like unique pieces for my home, and that certainly does not stop at my lamps. Right now I do not have a lot of room, and therefore do not need a lot of lamps, but I think the lamps I do have really make a statement.

This is part of a pair I bought in Warrenton during Round Top Antiques weekend. I think I paid $25 for the pair.

I found this at TJ Maxx, and fell in love. My one problem was did I need to have a pair of these lamps becasue a) it is huge and b) the price $50. After several long converstations with my mother and older sister, I bought just the one, and I am very happy with my decision.

Found this lamp at Stein Mart, I was really into coral (see previous post).

One of a pair that I found at Stein Mart, I really like the ginger jar look without them being sooo big and round.
Again one of a pair. I found just one of these lamps on a clearance table at Garden Ridge for $15. Because I wanted to have a pair, I set out to find one. I visited every Garden Ridge in the greater Houston area, and finally I think on the 4th or 5th Garden Ridge I found another lamp. It only cost me a few tanks of gas and maybe a hundred miles on my car, but it was well worth it.

Round Top Part II

I think I got some really interesting pieces this year. Some of the items are things I collect and others are just items that I thought were unique, and a good price.

Here are just some of the "smalls" I bought at Round Top.

I have been slowly building a collection of white pyrex or fireking mixing bowls, these two I found in a tent that was set up next to a house off of hwy 290. I paid just $10 for both.

I found this horse in Warrenton on a half price table. I am really starting build a collection of these ceramic horses, this is my 3rd horse purchase this year. I think I paid $10 for this blue beauty.

Silver vases, these vases are ceramic with a metallic finish. I am going through a mercury glass phase and these vases really fit in with the look I am trying to achieve.

And of course milk glass. I went in to this shopping trip saying I was "not going to buy any more milk glass". But these pieces were really unique, and I knew they would be great additions to my collection.

I found these botanical prints at an antique store in Carmine off of hwy 290. The booth's seller was closing shop and everything was %50 off. The sale price was $5 dollars each!

Round Top Part 1

This past weekend I headed to Round Top for the semi-annual antiques weekend. I met my mom, sister, and some good friends to spend way too much money, walk miles and miles until my entire body hurt, and have way too much fun.

On this particular trip I was not looking for anything specific, just some good deals and more items to add to my storage unit. Below are some of the larger pieces I purchased.

DRUMROLL PLEASE

Italian gold leaf side tables (they are a little beat up, and are missing a few knobs but the price was too good to pass up). I was in Carmine checking out the local antique stores when I saw just one of these tables outside with this tag on it. Now to most people this would be a great price, but the piece did have some problems and I was debating whether or not I could save it. But then I saw that there was another matching table with the same tag on it. However, I was still struggling with my decision, so I went inside the antique store to ask the owner about the tables. She said that she was trying to get rid of them and would give me a deal. So I asked "what's the best price you can do" and she said "$50 bucks for both" and I said "Sold"!

With some gold leafing, two knobs and some TLC these table are going to look "AMAZING"

The next post will be of all the smalls I bought, and yes there are some milk glass pieces included.

My Apartment

All of my "used" furniture looked really great in my old apartment in Dallas. I lived in a small complex in the lakewood area. "The Durango" was renovated building from the 60's or 70's and the management company Power Properties. The apartment had hardwood floors and dark blue grey accent walls that were a really nice backdrop to my collection of modern/traditional/hollywood regency decor. Below are photos from Power Properties website of my old complex and a "show" apartment.

I now live in a new cookie cutter apartment with wall to wall carpeting and plain white walls, which see to accentuate the scratches, tears, and worn out places on my furniture. And I am not quite sure if my stuff really fits, but I will let you be the judge.

Too much stuff Too little space

Over the past few years I have lived in several small apartments, with and without roommates. So although I have a passion for collecting furniture and knick knacks, I usually do not have enough space to showcase them in the place I am living. Case in point, about a year ago at Canton First Monday, I had found a great deal on an old patio set (the pieces were aluminum and had that bamboo/chippendale look going on).

I found a love seat and small tables from one vendor, and 4 chairs from another. The catch, I did not have a patio to put the pieces on, in fact I had never lived in a place that could have accommodated any type of patio furniture let alone 8 pieces. It took me trips to get all the pieces back to my apartment, where they sat taking up the entire back of the dining room and living room. The only choice I had was to get a storage unit.

Though this may seem crazy to some, I continue to buy items that I have no physical space in my apartment to put them. But I remember once reading about a designer who said that he had multiple storage units where he stockpiled all of the pieces he had collected over they years, so that when he did finally have a large enough home he would be able to fill every room with his special pieces. This is the story I am sticking to as well.

Latest purchase that I have no room for in my apartment. A vintage wheat grass metal wall hanging. Bought at the All City Indoor Market held once a month at the Pharr International Convention Center.

And, a piece that I do have room for, milk glass.

Turquoise

I love turquoise, it is my favorite color! I do not believe that you can ever have too much turquoise anything. I am constantly buying turqoise jewelry , as evidenced by my own personal collection below. I am always drawn to anything in a store that is turquoise. Some of the turquoise items I own; fiesta dishes, retro drink glasses, milk glass and too many other things to list here.

Coral

After I graduated high school my dear friend Elizabeth invited me to go with her family to the Cayman Islands. It was on this trip that I had my first interaction with coral. Of course, we were snorkeling and scuba diving and the rule is "DO NOT TOUCH OR YOU WILL KILL IT!!!" The coral and the island was beautiful and the trips was an experience I will never forget.

A few years later I really, really wanted some coral as decoration for my home. At the time all of the real stuff was way out of my price range and they really weren't making any reproduction coral at that time. Eventually I found this beautiful piece at Marshall's, and I was happy and content with my fake coral.

Then while driving to Dallas, my mom, sister and I stopped in Salado to look around. They were having an outdoor flea market (with all of 3 vendors) I bought this small piece of real coral for $1 dollar.

Then a few months later while at Round Top I got this piece for $10.

And just this past weekend my mother and I stumbled upon the tail end of an estate sale, where everything was half off. Mom bought a ton of silver serving pieces, and I got some more coral.

This brain coral was marked $10, but paid $5.

And these two peices with their stands were priced $5 each so paid $5 for both.

The Guild Shop

One of my favorite places to pick up unique pieces of jewelry, glassware or home decor is The Guild Shop of St. John the Divine in Houston. This charity/resale/consignment shop located in the heart of Houston, carries almost anything you could imagine. Because it wears so many hats, taking donations and consigning items, the inventory is constantly revolving, which is good and bad. Good, there is always something new to see when you go in, and bad because if you don't buy it when you see it, it will probably be gone the next time you go in. They also lower the price of items every few weeks and the lower price is listed on the tag. So lets say there is a great armoire but right now its $450 but in a month it will be $375 and in 2 months is will be $199e. If you can wait and you are lucky you could possibly get the armoire for half of its initial price.

The Guild Shop carries, furniture, kitchenware, home decor, art, clothing, linens and jewelry and tons of everything else in between.

"good" Junk

I LOVE "GOOD" JUNK

I love junk! Now when I say junk, I mean the good kind, slightly worn items of furniture or home decor. Finding "good" junk is a gift of mine. It may be genetic, inherent or learned, in my case I think a little bit of all three, but for some reason my entire family is great at finding "good" junk. My mother has deorated her entire house with it, my older sister has transformed many homes as well. My younger sister, well she has a tough time picking out things that don't cost a lot, but we love her anyway.

I do believe that this gift is directly descendent from my grandmother. I remember being maybe 8 years old and going to the Mcallen flea market to look for Blue Ridge and Fiesta pottery. When we would leave the flea market I would sit in the front seat, little sis relegated to the back, and look up all fo the plates we bought in the Blue Ridge book to "see how much they were worth".

I Have A Lot of Jewelry

I Have A Lot of Jewelry

It's not fancy stuff. I have some sterling silver pieces that were quite affordable (since I grew up on the border of Mexico and had access to the good ol 925). I have some really nice pieces of gold jewelry and some semi-precious stones jewelry, all of these items are relegated to the "fancy" jewelry box. What I have a lot of is costume jewelry.

When I first moved to Houston my older sister introduced me to HARWIN. For those of you who are not familiar with "H-Town" Harwin is actually a street that runs parallel to 59 S.
A good portion of the street (miles and miles) is lined on either side with import shops. Practically anything you could want or think of can be found down this street. The basics; perfume, jewelry, handbags, luggage, furniture, rugs, shoes, saris, fabric, sunglasses, bedding, and of course dollar store items.

My large collection has forced me to find some innovative ways to store my pieces.Purchased a shabby chic looking hat rack from Marshall's or TJ Maxx.

Another TJ Maxx purchase... this was actually a pewter color tall branch looking candlestick. I painted it peachy pink to match my bedroom decor, and then stacked my bangles on it.

To the right of the stack is a velvet store bracelet display bought in Harwing for 6 bucks.

When I bought the bracelet display I also purchased a ring display, for my collection of large rings.

Music Lyrics as Art

A few years ago I was reading an article in In Style Home that was showcasing actress Molly Sims NYC apartment. Not only did I really dig the all gray color palette, but I found great inspiration in a screen print hanging in her dining room.

Now I don't remember the artists name or what lyrics were painted it could be an INXYS song or The Cure???
Anyway....

One night when i should have been working on my graduate course homework I got it in my mind to try and replicate this print with my own favorite song lyrics. Since I did not have the first clue how to screen print (nor the space in my small 1 bedroom apartment) I had to figure out a different way to achieve this look. On a limited budget and doing all of my art supply shopping at Wal-Mart this is what I came up with.

I looked up the lyrics for a song from one of my all time favorite artists - Ray Lamontagne from his song Jolene off the album Trouble. I copy and pasted the lyrics then chose a font and color I liked then printed them. I decoupaged them onto the canvas then very carefully painted around the letters.

I also bought the frame on clearance at Hobby Lobby, hot glued the decals around the frame and then painted the plain brown a metallic blue gray. For my first try I think it turned out ok.

Have begun working on a new piece using some lyrics from lil wayne, when it is complete will post an update.

I started off not loving white milk glass. My mother had a huge beautiful collection, but I never really felt like it was something I wanted to collect. Then one day "BAM" I am obsessed and cannot get enough. Now I probably have over 80 pieces. Of course one color is not enough, so I started collecting the the shell pink. However shell pink is hard to find and when you do it is usually by someone who knows what it is (don't you just hate that) and is way out of my price range. Shell pink led to the even harder to find turquoise and just recently I scored two beautiful black pieces, so I guess I am on to black.

Quick note: I know that I am not necessarily using the correct terminology for milk glass and its various incarnations. If you are versed in glassware please school me on the right terms to use.

At this moment......

I am currently obsessed with silhouettes and mirrored furniture. Of course I always become attached to things that a) are not readily available or b) are way out of my price range (i.e. elementary teacher paying to get her masters). In my mind I am very artsy crafty, but the fact of the matter is every silhouette I attempt to make myself never turns out quite right. I have bought a few silhouettes on ebay, but they were the size of my palm (I know I should have read the dimensions before bidding). If anyone makes silhouettes or has any ideas on how or where to get them please give send me a line.

As for the mirrored furniture, I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to attempt a DIY project. Now all I need is the perfect piece of cheap furniture, a cheap glass company, some silver leaf, and I should be set.

Below is the little collection I do have, I resorted to adding black and white etchings and drawings to help fill the space. The deer horns are something I bought at a flea market and then hand painted with a color I mixed of black and silver acrylic paint.
